Smart televisions, smart phones, smart watches. There are many smart things in our lives, but one trend I can get behind is smart homes. Smart homes use today’s latest technology to make our lives a bit easier. These days there are many players in the smart home world. Amazon, Apple, Google, and Nest are all part of the smart home arena. They have ecosystems and smart assistants available to help you make a grocery list, answer a trivia question, or even turn off your light. Samsung, Wink, Zigbee, and Honeywell also help set up all your smart home technologies and get them talking to each other. When it comes to making your home smart, you can go as big or little as you want. Below are two of my favorite smart home devices being used in smart homes today.
Here you have a few choices. Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant are two big players in the speaker game. These speakers can be used for several tasks, such as playing music, setting a timer, or even playing the news, all with the sound of your voice. The neat thing about Alexa, is how easy it is to integrate with other devices around your smart home. The same Amazon smart assistant that is in Alexa, can be found in thermostats like Ecobee4, light switches like Ecobee Switch+, and even TVs. One of my favorite features, even though it seems small, is the ability to turn off all the lights with one command to Alexa. With the right bulbs and set up, you don’t have to get back up out of bed if you forgot to turn off a light. It is a big change from the “clap on, clap off” days.
Now many new homes are being built with smart thermostats, but this is something you could add to your existing home as well.
Google Nest’s unique design changed the way consumers and other tech designers looked at thermostats, by allowing consumers the ability to control their home heat and AC through an app. This allowed tech savvy people the opportunity be more conscious of their energy use and keep their home the perfect temperature from anywhere. It also has a learning algorithm that can adjust to when you come and go.
Ecobee, as mentioned above is another great option for thermostats. It allows you to place sensors is various parts of your home, so you can keep track of how your whole home is doing when it comes to heating and AC. Depending on the version you get, you also will have an Away mode that can be automatically turned off when sensors are detected.
Honeywell Lyric also is a great choice. Depending on the model you pick, it can automatically go into Home or Away mode. It does this by using geofence capabilities to monitor when your phone leaves the radius of your home. This device also works with both Amazon Alexa and the Apple Homekit.
Now the idea is to have all your devices talk together, so it is easier for you. Amazon Alexa works well with most devices. Google Assistant is able to control Chromecast TVs, whereas Amazon Alexa is unable to do so. That is why it is important to do your research and figure out what device will fit your home’s needs the best. Keep an eye out on packaging that states “Works with…” to help you make an informed decision.
