We visited two ways smart homes make life a bit easier in Smart Homes- Part 1. Smart Speakers and Thermostats definitely help with every day tasks. This time, we’re going to focus on how smart homes can keep us safe by focusing on doorbells and alarm systems.
First up, door bells… Doorbells have come a long way, from the original door knocker to what they are today. The latest doorbells come with camera’s that you can easily monitor from your mobile devices. This is perfect when you have unexpected visitors or have packages getting dropped off on your doorstep.
Ring’s Video Doorbell 2 offers motion-activated alerts rights out of the box. You get 1080HD video and video recording, plus two-way talk. All of this works off your home wifi and an internal battery pack. The battery, itself, will last between 6 months to a year without needing to be recharged. You also can keep an eye on things at night with the night vision capability.
A more budget friendly option to upgrade your doorbell, try the Zmodo’s Green Smart Doorbell. This doorbell has two-way communication, plus motion detection that will send alerts to your smartphone and even records a short video clip. Need to leave a message? The Green Smart Doorbell will also allow you to record a brief, personalized voice message.
Now with your smart doorbell, you have eyes on your front door, but what about the rest of your home? Another way, to make your home a bit smarter and safer, you can install a security system. You can hire a service to take care of this part, or you can purchase a system yourself. One recommended system is Abode Starter Kit. This one will work with Alexa, IFTT, and Nest, which is a great benefit. You have the option to add accessories and it is contract free. The initial price may be a bit high, but you get a lot of hardware for that price.
One option that is more affordable is SimpliSafe. This system doesn’t sync up with a larger smart home platform, but you get an easy to set up and to use system. It has a variety of sensors that all perform well and it the look of the system is appealing.
